In belated news,
I returned to Salone de Mobile in Milan for what I thought could be extending an olive branch to a part of my spirit that needed to feel inspired again. In a lot of ways it was what I consider a perfect trip because it awakened all of my senses again. The city was giving me what LA hasn’t given me in a while. And I think it’s worth being honest about. I liked the tempo, the scale of it, I admired the work I was seeing. It’s almost as if it’s a place in Italy that has escaped from the shackles of historical fetishism and has positioned itself to be more expansive, even if tradition in terms of craft are still closely tethered. Anyone would have a craving for it.
While out there, I made the effort to visit Florence to see Numeroventi for myself and walk the IRL-museum of a city. How hedonistic! A city multiple friends said they’d live in forever if they could. I don’t know if I felt that way exactly but there is bliss in taking a nap in the Boboli Gardens before having a bowl of rigatoni the size of my skull.

I feel tingly when I think about my time in Milan even now as I write this from Sea Ranch almost two months later. Up here I am utterly alone with the fog and the hedgerows of Monterey Cypress trees. It feels like pure peace. To loosen my grip a bit and walk between the trees. I’m starting to think there’s no such thing as coincidences anymore and the laws of the universe delivered me to these places at the pointed time I needed them. What can I say, Milan felt good. It’s only a matter of time before I’m back for longer. Why not?
